Illustration of an under-sink leak. Water where it shouldn’t be? Buddy the Plumber, 423-401-9009.

A puddle under the sink is one thing. Water spreading across the floor while you’re trying to find its source is another. When plumbing trouble starts suddenly, the most useful question is: Is water still escaping, or is wastewater coming back into the house?

Here are the warning signs Chattanooga homeowners should take seriously—and the details that help a plumber understand what’s happening when you call.

1. Water keeps coming, even after you stop using the fixture

A spraying supply line, split hose, or leak that keeps spreading needs prompt attention. If you can safely reach the fixture’s shutoff valve and know how to operate it, close it gently. If the leak continues or you cannot identify the source, use your home’s main water shutoff only if you know its location and can reach it safely. Don’t force a stuck valve.

Keep away from water near outlets, appliances, or electrical equipment. Do not enter standing water to reach a switch, breaker panel, or valve. If there is an immediate electrical danger, move away and contact emergency services.

2. Flushing or running water makes another fixture back up

If flushing a toilet sends water into the shower, or several drains start backing up together, stop using the affected plumbing and call. A problem farther along the drain system may be involved; repeated flushing or running the washing machine can add more water to the backup.

Keep children and pets away from sewage or contaminated water. Don’t add drain chemicals or mix cleaning products. Tell the plumber if any product has already been used.

3. A toilet overflows and won’t settle

Don’t flush again to “see if it clears.” Close the toilet’s water supply valve if it is safe and moves easily. That can stop the tank refilling, but it does not clear a drain blockage or stop a sewer backup. If other fixtures are affected or wastewater keeps rising, stop water use and describe those symptoms when you call.

4. Water appears through a ceiling or wall

A growing wet patch, active dripping, or a sagging ceiling needs attention even when you can’t see a broken pipe. Stay clear of a sagging ceiling and keep others out of the area. Don’t poke it or open a wall to investigate. Stop using plumbing above the area when possible, and report what was running when the leak began.

Not every wet patch is a plumbing leak—roofing, condensation, and other sources can also be involved. An inspection helps identify the cause.

What to tell Buddy when you call

  • Your address and a callback number.
  • Where the water is appearing and whether it is still spreading.
  • Whether it looks like clean water or a wastewater backup.
  • Whether one fixture or several are affected.
  • Whether you have shut off the water, and whether that changed anything.

If it is safe, take a quick photo. Don’t delay leaving an unsafe area to document damage.

Emergency plumbing FAQs

Can I wait until Monday if I’ve shut the water off?

Stopping the water can limit damage, but it doesn’t establish that the situation is safe. An isolated fixture that is off and no longer leaking is different from sewage, hidden water damage, or a home without usable plumbing. Call, describe the situation, and ask about the next available service.

Is shutting off the water enough for a sewage backup?

No. It does not clear the obstruction or guarantee that a backup will stop. Stop using drains and water-using appliances, keep clear of contaminated water, and arrange professional help.

Should I pour drain cleaner into an overflowing drain?

No. Avoid adding chemicals to standing water or a suspected sewer backup. Let the plumber know about any chemicals already present.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the building immediately. Don’t use switches, flames, or a phone inside. From a safe location outside, call 911 or your gas utility’s emergency line. Do not wait for a plumbing appointment.

Does Buddy guarantee an immediate after-hours visit?

No guaranteed arrival time is promised. Call to explain the problem and confirm current availability, timing, and any applicable charges. Regular office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
